Ask the Expert | Spray Tanning 101
I have been lucky enough to meet some of the top experts in their field in my time in Los Angeles, so now I want to be able to share some of the tips and tricks I have picked up along the way. Introducing Jessica Johnston, makeup and tanning artist, she has bronzed me for special events and photo shoots. I finally sat down and got to ask her the questions I have always wanted to know.
How to prep for a spray tan?
- Ideally, exfoliate and shave at least 6 hours before. You want pores to close back up before applying tanning solution. Using a sugar or coffee scrub with about 40 percent oil. An overly oily scrub acts as a barrier between the skin and the solution.
- Right before, make skin is dry and clean of all oils and moisturizers.
What is best way to describe what color tan you want?
Best thing to do is to inform the tanning artist, how you normally absorb color and tan in the sun. If you're somebody who tans quickly, looking for more of a glow versus full-on tan, artist will know what color to go with to give you that look. Also, describe the occasion ie special event, wedding, or vacation. Second option, find some pictures of tans you really like.
What should you do right after your spray tan?
Wear loose dark clothing because you don't want to wear something tight that will act as an exfoliator against the body, removing the tan.
How many days before a special event?
For a special event, ideally theday before or at least 8 hours to allow color to set in and showerbefore the event.
How many days before your wedding?
I always suggest 2 days before so the body to absorbs the color. Anybody wearing white whether it be for a special event or wedding has to be extra careful. 2 showers is suggested so there is zero possibility of transfer.
What are the best ways to maintain tan and what should you avoid?
Best thing to use is a water-based lotion to keep skin hydrated. If skin starts to get dry it will naturally start to exfoliate, thus the tan won’t last as long.

What are the benefits of non-toxic organic solution?
Besides the solution being chemical free, there is a difference in color. Organic tanning solutions will be more of a golden brown, earth tone, where a chemical based tan is deeper in reds and oranges. It gives a more natural look without the sun damage. Natural products are beneficial to skin, nourish and hydrate. Specifically the product I use is odorless, you are not stuck with that awful fake spray tan scent.
How long should typically should a spray tan last?
6-9 days.
Pro Tips?
- It is really important to let artist know, if you just started on any medication or antibiotics, that will change the chemistry of your body effecting the way your body absorbs color.
- When exfoliating, make sure to exfoliate the back heel and elbows, a dead giveaway for a spray tan.
- If you're short on time, use a dry brush.
- Hydration is key to maintain any tan, moisturized and plump. Drinking enough water, keeps theelasticity in the skin to maintain optimum length of tan.
- To enhance the tan and contour your body, use a shimmery bronzer. Lightly dust the decolletage, arms, and legs.
