My absolute favorite thing to do come summer is pack up a picnic of my favorite things and head to the beach, a drive I take for granted because, as it is a 15 minute straight shot to the Pacific Ocean from my house. Last weekend, my sister and I gathered up our things and did just that, getting some beautiful weather and some delicious goodies to enjoy on the sand. I was responsible for the food, so I brought a feast of fried chicken, a salad, fresh fruit, and some homemade cherry tarts I have been dying to make since it’s cherry season!

We started reminiscing about doing this exact thing with our grandfather every summer, but he would always take it to another level. We may have had a typical picnic fare of sandwiches and potato chips, but come dessert, he always had a surprise. He would dip into the cooler and pull out a container of vanilla ice-cream that had been neatly packed away under layers of ice, a metal ice cream scoop and a few cans of Dr Pepper. He would pour the Dr Pepper over each scoop, and we would go crazy for the bubbly concoction of ice-cream and soda, eating it up as fast as we can and begging for another. Needless to say, my grandfather was a hit with all of our friends growing up.

This tradition has been carried over between my sister and our friends. Whether throwing a celebration at home or taking it to the beach, we sentimentally always have Dr Pepper on hand to drink or for of course an impromptu soda float.
