Summer Nights: Dining Al Fresco
One of the best things about summer is eating outside. Since spending so much time at home, being able to sit in the backyard and have a glass of wine or a meal has made such a difference.
While using paper plates and napkins may be easy, now is the time to take joy in the everyday and break out the good stuff! My mom always uses her good silver for meals because according to her, “What am I saving it for ?” Making a little effort makes a big impact to your dining experience, I shared my dining al-fresco must-haves below.
OUTDOOR TABLE AND CHAIRS
Outdoor furniture is tricky. It can be expensive, so you want to get the right thing for you. I am partial to teak because it stands the test of time and fades over the year. I like this simple teak table (or this budget option.) For seating, I like a simple chair (like this option) and a bench.
LINENS
Not to get on a soap box about this, but please use linen napkins. It makes such a difference to drape a beautiful linen napkin over your lap. These washable linen napkins make it easy to throw in washing machine after dinner! I have used mine hundreds of times and they still look great. This goes for a tablecloth too! I also love the look of a simple linen runner down the table.
CANDLES
What could be more lovely than eating dinner by candlelight? I love the look of a taper candle, so I recently snapped up these Jenni Kayne candle holders. Votives or tea lights are also great at adding some twinkly ambiance. If bugs are a problem, it may be worth having some citronella candles burning around as well.
Place Settings and serving pieces
I love mixing and matching place settings. I use my Meghan Flynn ceramic plates for dinner (these are a good budget option.) For serving pieces, I use some vintage ironstone, my new Astier de Villate platter, and this Gjusta Salad bowl.
FOOD COVERS
Whether its a cheese plate or a meal, sometimes you need something to cover your food while everyone gathers around the table. I discovered these rattan food covers you can place over your dishes to keep unwanted pests out until you are ready to serve!
